There are two ways to approach disc manufacturing, one is replication and the other is duplication. Replication is mainly reserved for runs of 500 discs or more and requires a laser beam recorder, whereby a laser is used to expose minute areas of a photo-resist layer on top of a rotating glass master disc. The lengths and spacing of these areas are defined by the data to be stored on the disc. These areas are then developed to form pits and coated in a thin layer of nickel on which a nickel father is grown using an electroforming process. A mother is then grown from the father and the stampers grown from the mother. The data to be mastered for the disc is used as the input data during the glass mastering process. This is how all retail discs are manufactured and are guaranteed to play back on all players; so in essence, we manufacture the disc with the data already on it!

The second way is duplication. This is mainly reserved for runs of 500 discs or less and takes pre-manufactured media and burns the pre-mastered data to the disc using “tower burners.” This is a very cost-effective method of manufacturing short orders.
